Double Tap to Zoom

Not a shirt, not yet a jacket: the overshirt is the perfectly imperfect product to transition from spring into summer with, and then summer into fall. Now, when mornings and evenings are still a wee bit too chilly to not have a light little something to wrap yourself in on hand, a trusted overshirt'll have you covered – literally.

Other than that it's often made with sturdier textiles, inspired by workwear, and features – at the very least – one proper pocket, there's no definitive definition as to what constitutes an overshirt. So, we've taken the liberty to list what we'd think are viable options, and included designer variants made of everything from classic neutrals, to pastel suedes, to tie-dyed denims.

Shirt? Jacket? Both? Neither?

Acne Studios Tie-Dye Overshirt

In thick cotton with big buttons, this faux-smutty overshirt by Acne Studios traverses as easy from spring to summer to fall, as it does from day to night. It's somehow reverse-bleach-looking-pattern adds dimension to what would have otherwise been a far simpler piece.

adidas Y-3 Twill Overshirt

Yohji Yamamoto's distinctly Japanese aesthetic radiates off of this design without banging you over the head. It's soft and sensible and fluid-seeming in a way that almost subverts the few , aforementioned rules involved in what makes an overshirt, without actually deviating from them.

A.P.C. Denim Overshirt

Tip-toeing along the tightrope that separates a jean jacket from a jean shirt, A.P.C.'s iteration of the titular category is for those of you who need no frills, no drama, no extra pizzaz, but are at your happiest when wearing straightforward, high quality garments.

Arcteryx Light Jacket

Though its official product reference deems it a jacket, we'd argue the lightness and silhouette and military green of Arc'teryx's Spere model has the potential to become any outdoorsy urbanite's favorite new overshirt(!).

Maison Kitsuné Canvas Overshirt

It's not just us, by the way, that take a particular interest in this hybrid, not-quite- but also not-quite-not-outerwear item. Celebs, too, seem to love a canvas quasi-coat like this one when it's too warm out to wear a jacket but too cold not to.

Martine Rose Black Denim Overshirt

Knowing her, it should come as no surprise that Martine Rose'd naturally gravitate toward the boxy overshirt and give it her own spin. This dark denim version of one catches any onlooker's eye with its subtly exaggerated tailoring in the shoulders and the tape-resembling chest appliqué.

Tom Ford Suede Overshirt

Both in terms of price and of design, this baby blue ultra luxe contender's in a league of its own – as is never not the case with anything Tom Ford.

Stone Island

Moving on, the curtain call, a more traditional take on the overshirt, by what is perhaps a more traditional brand to tend to for one: we have here a functional, army green Stone Island piece for weightless, warm-weather layering.
