Sole Food is a weekly series built on sneaker editor Morgan Smith's takes on the biggest topics in sneaker culture.

You are what you eat. That’s the motto currently epitomized by the world’s biggest sneaker brands, which are all uniformly pushing food-flavored sneakers that look and sound borderline edible.

(But, please, don’t nibble on these shoes.)

Food and fashion goes together like, well, peanut butter and chocolate. Remember the other year's parade of edible-looking handbags and that Balenciaga followed its collaboration grocery-turned-lifestyle-brand Erewhon with actual smoothies earlier this year.

But food and footwear is a more flavorful offering. There's been a recent uptake in sneakers riffing on eats and drinks like pistachios and matcha, enough to make a feast of “edible” kicks.

On September 25, adidas and NYC brand Asphalt dropped a limited-edition “Cannoli” Samba, featuring slick chocolate brown leather and creamed-out interiors. Days later, the German sportswear brand unveiled both a matcha-inspired Samba sneaker with Molly Mae and the first-ever Snickers football cleat (yes, the candy brand).

Earlier this summer, Nike cooked up Cheetos-dusted Vomero Plus runners and several “candy-coated” KD19 basketball shoes. And on October 20, Reebok will release a peanut-butter chocolate brown Angel Reese 1 sneaker with, yes, Reese’s. It’s tastily on the nose but also part of a bigger food-themed sneaker craze.

The theme has historically made for more interesting releases. Food-themed shoes are a longtime staple, running the gamut from Ben & Jerry’s coveted Nike SB Dunks to END.’s “Burger” Saucony to Concepts' citrusy New Balances. Even without a direct food connection, sneakers look good enough to eat with mouthwatering "chocolate cake" colorways. The more in-your-face efforts like the cannoli-inspired Sambas or Reese’s-flavored basketball shoes only give you something particularly substantial to chew on.

Perhaps these sneakers are an echo of the times they exist in. Grocery prices are insanely up, while many fridge staples have landed on the recall lists.

Thus whatever’s in your cart, whether it be Cutwater Spirits or prebiotic sodas, says just as much about you as your Zodiac chart. It's a flex. And it has all led to this very moment, when sneakers are looking especially delicious.
