The Best Birkenstock Sandals Are Becoming Real Studs
For every pair of classic Birkenstock sandals, there’s a fancy counterpart. It started with the Boston and Arizona, the two torchbearers of Birks’ sandal empire, which led the charge of ever-more artful Birk shoes. They were the first to be rendered in rubber and the first to be realized as luxury objects. They were also the first to wear Western-flavored metal rivets, an in-house riff on a popular post-market Birk remix.
The result was a little punk, a little flashier than your average Birk, and extremely cool. Birkenstock knew it had a good thing going because the 250-year-old German shoemaker has added new colorways and models to its selection of studs.
The classics led the charge and now some of Birk’s more modest creations are next.
The Siena is essentially a twisted Arizona, where the two straps that keep everything together sit parallel rather than perpendicular. Classic Birk shape made new through many metal rivets.
It mightn’t be as extreme a design update as other newly released open-toed Birkenstocks, which range from military-minded technical sandals to ones rendered near-unrecognizable by shaggy-haired uppers but that’s part of why Birkenstock is so good at making Birkenstocks. Its shoes are instantly recognizable and wearable, just jazzed up.
The Siena is the fourth metal-riveted Birkenstock model, available exclusively for Birkenstock members — which only entails making an account on Birkenstock’s website — and costing $154.95. Expect this slick shoe to open the door for more classic models to get a studded upgrade, as familiar as those funky three-strapped sandals or as wild as the fuzzy shearling slides.
