Travis Scott’s Nike collabs were never not hyped. The duo has dished sold-out sneakers since 2017, with Cactus Jack merch swiftly entering the mix in 2018. At first, these were effectively just “Travis Scott sneakers,” the rapper's signature Nikes with an admittedly cool flipped Swoosh, nice colorways, and massive star power. An ordinary collab with extraordinary hype.

However, Cactus Jack drops have evolved from glorified Travis Scott collectibles to a cornerstone of Nike’s strategy of correctly showing up at cultural happenings. The backwards-Swoosh idea wasn’t new (The Air Darwin, worn by Dennis Rodman, debuted in 1994 with the flipped logo). To Scott’s fans, however, it’s fresh and the coolest thing out, which has come to represent Cactus Jack as a whole, regardless of venue. The shoes were already everywhere, but Scott’s Nike partnership is now an excuse to explore several different sports and lifestyle categories in a way that feels authentically fresh (even if it's only semi-authentic to Scott himself).

On September 4, Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack and Nike debuted the "Cactus Court” tennis collection featuring streetwear and performance apparel, Zoom Vapor 12 HC sneakers, and blue ostrich-leather Air Force 1 Lows. It’s classic Cactus Jack x Nike but US Open-ready, co-signed by tennis champ Carlos Alcaraz, at that. Nike, a sportswear giant, making tennis clothes makes sense. But court gear from a famous rapper’s line? It’s admittedly a bit odd, but it works.

You saw early inklings of the modern Cactus Jack with 2022's Cactus Trails collection — a rapper's shoe line reconsidering a casual running sneaker as a desert trail runner? — before hitting its stride with redesigned performance shoes by 2024, like those Jordan 1 Low baseball cleats made for the Cactus Jack HBCU Classic. By 2026, Cactus Jack was turning out Total 90 jerseys and football boots for the World Cup. But even as Cactus Jack dips that much deeper into actual sport, some efforts, like its new exotic icy-blue Air Force 1 Lows launched as part of the US Open-aligned Cactus Court capsule, are typical Travis Scott Nikes wrapped in tennis-adjacent packaging. 

Cactus Jack and Nike are bigger than sports now. They were present for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey run, with co-star Scott repping unreleased Nike Moon Shoes at The Odyssey’s NYC premiere, which turned out to be yet another Cactus Jack x Nike moment. The dark-colored, vintage-style Moon Shoes and a hairy ACG Moc shoe were produced exclusively for the film’s cast and crew, while Cactus Jack The Odyssey tees were made available to everyone. 

Hardly anyone can integrate into the worlds of basketball and film as effortlessly as Cactus Jack, which says a lot about the label. And the collaboration’s not just crossing over into new categories but becoming a legit opportunity to both deepen Nike’s cultural presence and the relevance of Cactus Jack, whether Scott is involved or not. 

It’s wild to think that, only a few years ago, Cactus Jack shoes were simply Travis Scott’s cool Nikes and Jordans with the flipped Swoosh. But there was also this feeling that the brand could be doing more. Now, it is. Cactus Jack’s turning out golf-able Jordans, tennis sneakers, and custom footwear for Hollywood blockbusters. And beyond Cactus Jack showing up for these major moments, it’s dishing seriously strong standalone product. Even the clothes hit hard — recent capsules brought reimagined Alcaraz and Odyssey graphics to the brand’s signature muted streetwear uniform. Travis Scott may be at the heart of it all but Cactus Jack has come to stand for much more. Nowadays, it’s “Cactus Jack everything” and it’s quite good.
