Two bottles of extremely limited edition 60-year-old Macallan whisky have been auctioned off for a combined total of $2.11 million USD, setting a world record, reports South China Morning Post.

Highlighted during the Bonhams auction held in Hong Kong for fine and rare wines, and whiskies, both 750-milliliter vintage bottles were distilled in 1926 and matured in a sherry hogshead cask until being bottled in 1986. Only twelve of each Macallan were ever produced.

One bottle, bearing a label designed by British pop artist Peter Blake, sold for HK$7.96 million (US$1.01 million), while the other bottle, whose label was designed by Italian artist Valerio Adami, went for HK$8.64 million (US$1.1 million).

The previous record for a bottle of whisky sold at auction was set in 2014 when a six-litre Macallan was sold for HK$4.9 million.

Daniel Lam, head of wine and whisky at Bonhams in Hong Kong shared, "These bottles are some of the oldest whiskies produced by Macallan in the 20th century," adding, "They were not meant for sale. They were given to very important clients of Macallan."
