Editor’s Notes: After consistent rumors that Jordan Brand will be releasing a third men’s Nike Air Jordan 1 “Shattered Backboard,” and a mockup showing how it might look, there are suggestions the upcoming colorway will be constructed using patent leather instead of the regular leather used on most Air Jordan 1s.
If true, this wouldn’t be the first time “The One That Started It All” has been dressed in patent leather. Previous patent leather Air Jordan 1s include the recent “UNC” colorway and last year’s “Gold Toe.”
The “Shattered Backboard 1.0” dropped in June 2015, while the “Shattered Backboard 2.0” followed in October 2016. There was also a satin women’s version, which dropped in May 2018. While the first version was a spin on the “Black Toe” Air Jordan 1, flipping the red to orange (with added orange toe box), and the second reimagined the “Chicago” colorway, this release looks to be a take on the “Banned”/Bred” OG.
The name “Shattered Backboard” comes from a moment after Michael Jordan’s rookie season, in the summer of 1985, when he played in an exhibition game in Italy. Jordan, wearing the orange, black, and white of Stefanel Trieste, hit a dunk so hard he shattered the glass backboard. Check out the famous moment below.
