Ralph Lauren Turned the Loafer Into a Slipper
We’d like to report a crime on behalf of the above-average-footed community. Polo Ralph Lauren has created a perfectly sporty leather loafer for Fall/Winter 2026… and only made it available in women’s sizes.
The Polo Loafer has the vibe of a racecar: sleek lines and aerodynamic form, like a PUMA Speedcat slowed down and having a tryst with a smoking slipper. In the realm of loafers, where the preferred route to standing out has been Frankenstein-ing the silhouette into a sneaker-loafer monstrosity, it’s reassuring to see Polo Ralph Lauren understand that less is more.
You can incorporate the vibe of a runner without actually hybridizing the form (while also leaning into the trend of flattening footwear, as seen with everything from Miu Miu x New Balance to the endless ballet sneakers). What a concept! And one that’s clearly caught on.
At least one fashion influencer, Jake Fleming, literally flew cross-country from New York to LA hunting for the loafer after seeing Polo post about it. And already, both colorways have sold out. Call it an appetite for a return to simpler, classic footwear shapes, or simply the perfect bridge between the extreme popularity of flat-soled sneakers and a yearning for an easy, winter-friendly shoe that still stands out. The bold red and deep navy leather here isn’t quiet, but it’s still clean.
Ralph Lauren has never been hotter. The heritage label is on the eve of its 60th anniversary next year, and each runway show feels more peak than the last. Plus, Polo has somehow elevated its cool after its former creative director, Michael Rider, decamped to Celine. No easy task. The brand’s current CD, James Jeter, has elevated the imagery, delivered great runway shows and is now making slippers, of all things, a covetable item.
The good news is that calling it the Polo Loafer signals this may become a new signature silhouette. And with the product description listing men’s tuxedo slippers as a reference point, all signs point to this new shoe getting the all-gender treatment. Listen, its what we need and deserve.
As Fleming said in the caption for his loafer quest video: God is real and it is a Ralph Lauren loafer.
