Coco Chanel once said that before we leave the house, we should look in the mirror and take one thing off. That’s the essence of minimalism: less is more. Minimalism has long been associated with the heights of refinement, but Saint Laurent has something to say about that this season.

Anthony Vaccarello’s latest collection features a pair of mind-boggling kicks that throw caution to the wind when it comes to detailing. The Saint Laurent Smith Sneakers say more is more.

Actually, that’s not strictly true. Underneath all of the detailing, the Saint Laurent Smith Sneakers are relatively understated. Modeled after basketball styles of the ‘90s, the high-top leather silhouette, although obscured by wrapped kerchiefs, features little detailing at all. Aside from hits of brown and red to the outsole, an embroidered logo to the heel is about as far as detailing goes.

That’s ignoring the elephant in the room, though. Each shoe features a black and white striped kerchief tied, wrapped, tucked, and draped all around it. The hectic finish definitely garners attention to a shoe that otherwise would have slipped by unimposingly.
