Here is the latest entry in our partnership with COLORS BERLIN, an online music channel that aims to break down the barriers of the musical landscape. ALL COLORS NO GENRES is their main mission – from hip-hop to indie, electronica, R&B and pop, COLORS BERLIN allows artists to present themselves and their work in a contemporary way. We’ve teamed up with them on a series of video shorts in which artists are invited to perform one of their own tracks in the COLORS studio.

Illa J’s current music career may have been destiny. He happens to be the younger brother of the late J Dilla, legendary hip-hop producer extraordinaire. Before he decided to give music a proper try, his passion was basketball. But after J Dilla passed away in 2006, he dropped out of university to focus on music and the rest is history.

His 2008 debut album Yancey Boys featured previously unused beats from his older brother. Since then, he’s steadily been releasing singles, mixtapes, EPs and full-lengths, and his output thus far more than proves he’s a stellar force with or without J Dilla. Look no further than Illa J’s performance of “Sam Cook” off his recently-released third studio album Home for proof, with his insanely smooth delivery of vocals and bars, then dig into the rest of the LP below.
