Editor’s Notes: Judging by Spanish retailer Sivadescalzo’s release calendar, Yoon Ahn’s white AMBUSH x Nike Air Max 180 will be getting a wider release on April 26. The white colorway previously dropped in February at NikeLab 21 Mercer in New York City in highly limited numbers.
Nike announced its collaboration with Ahn in fall 2018. Her debut collection, released in December, featured an incredibly cozy fur jacket, but fans were kept waiting for the Air Max 180. “The Air Max 180 is the first pair of sneakers I ever bought with my own money,” Ahn said at the time. “I wanted it so badly, having seen it in the pages of a magazine. I actually saved up money to buy those pairs. So I just wanted to make my own version.”
The Air Max 180’s tooling sits under the Air Zoom Flight’s zip-up cover. The idea of adding elements from the Air Zoom Flight, aka “The Glove,” came to Ahn during a visit to Nike’s Beaverton HQ. “When I visited the Nike archive, I saw ‘The Glove.’ It looks so cozy, so comfortable from afar. I wanted to capture that feeling and fully wrap the foot,” she said.
Highsnobiety’s Lucy Thorpe recently sat down with Ahn to discuss her Nike collaboration and what else is coming. With Ahn now one of Nike’s premier collaborators, she touched on whether her Air Max 180 design is for women or for everyone.
“The foot doesn’t have sex organs,” Ahn said. “A foot is a foot, you know what I mean? The first thing I told Nike was, ‘I don’t see the point of separating men’s and women’s sneakers.’ It just comes down to metrics. Centimeters is a much better way of approaching sneakers for me because they don’t have a gender.”
When asked about what other sneakers she has in her rotation, Ahn admitted Nike sent her a ton of models to test, adding, “I personally love the UNDERCOVER x Nike React Element 87 because they’re so light. Sometimes I forget that I’m wearing them. Also, the Air VaporMax because they’re also so comfortable.”
As for what’s coming next, Ahn remained tight-lipped: “Well, there is another shoe coming but I can’t disclose which model.”
