Editor's Notes: We love a comeback story, and so does the sneaker industry at large. Many of today's most popular footwear silhouettes aren't new, per se; instead, they're modernizations or reimaginings of high flyers from the 90s and early 200s.
Our obsessive nostalgia may have us locked in the past, but when it means a second chance at picking up a childhood grail with better quality and technology, can we really complain? No, I say.
Although Nike and Jordan Brand feel like the most obvious names to mention, thanks to their near-constant revival of long past sneakers and ultra-specific colorways, ASICS has seemingly mastered the art.
Perhaps all glory goes to Kiko Kostadinov for putting ASICS (specifically ASICS Sportstyle) back on the map, not unlike Teddy Santis' work with New Balance thus far. Since his tenure began in 2020, Kiko hasn't faltered from the line nor taken his foot off the gas, pushing out some of the OG running brand's best of all time colorways and retouched retro bangers.
The most recent addition to his exciting and growing portfolio was the UB3-S GEL-NIMBUS 9. Served as the designer's super modernized take on the 2007 GEL-NIMBUS 9, the selection is characterized by boldly contrasting palettes that care not for subtly.
Now, attention is diverted to the classic form of the GEL-NIMBUS 9, which quickly became a staple for runners across the globe when it originally hit the market. Adored for its smooth, cushioned ride and a glove-like fit, the sneaker is constructed on a base of mesh and synthetic leather, channeling a mid-2000 aesthetic that remains on-trend today.
For its return, a selection of retro running-inspired pallets has been applied to the sneaker for both men and women, including "Piedmont Grey/Aruba Blue," "Rum Raisin/Green Sheen," "Abbey Stone/Champagne," and "Stonewash/Lint."
