Balenciaga’s FW18 show took place over the weekend as Demna Gvasalia showed his first collection since announcing the unification of his men’s and womenswear. This idea of unification appeared to be a theme for FW18 in more ways than one. Dominating the show were a range of multiple garments technically bonded together to appear as a single item, a style that Demna described as being “inspired by the snowboarders of the early ’90s,” according to Dazed.

Along with a nod to the Pride flag, the setting emphasized messages of inclusivity and togetherness too. A “mountain” (perhaps another reference to snowboarders) was plastered with graffiti that read “no borders,” “you are the world,” and “power of dreams” (an expression that was also printed on the luxury German shopping bags). The garish colors of the graffiti were also repeated in the all-in-one velour gloved rollnecks, another interpretation of unification.

It hasn’t been revealed who constructed the mountain but it appears to be based on the IRL “Salvation Mountain” from the North American Desert community Slab City. Along with a $50,000 donation to the World Food Programme, Balenciaga demonstrated that it’s not just about creating internet meme-worthy pieces (although this one is making the rounds on Instagram), but about creating progressive fashion with a global initiative, and continuing OG founder Cristobal Balenciaga’s penchant for maximum volume.

We’ll have to wait until general release to see what pieces bang in the real word, but judging from recent trends for bright colors, and the potential for surf and snowboarding brands to make a comeback, here’s what Twitter and Instagram were saying about some the most divisive and soon-to-be seen everywhere pieces.
