Crocs’ Trail Racer Gives the Clog Brand a Gorpy Detour
More and more traditionally reliable sneakers are doing a complete 180 into obscure silhouettes so left-field they're barely still recognizable. Crocs is one of the few brands that have mastered that switch.
Specifically its new Quick Trail Racer V2 Cordura.
The name might sound pretty serious, but the sneaker itself is anything but. It’s slightly strange and covered in the kind of little details that make you wonder how we got from the classic clog to this. Somewhere along the way, Crocs clearly decided it wanted in on the whole weird outdoor sneaker thing. Fair enough, really.
The Quick Trail Racer has that slightly overbuilt look that makes even a very normal outfit feel like you’ve put some thought into it. Throw it on with a pair of smart pleated pants and suddenly you look like you know what you’re doing.
The Cordura upper only adds to the appeal, giving the whole thing a properly outdoorsy feel without going so far that you look like you’re about to disappear into the woods for three days. It’s more city hiker than actual hiker, which is probably where most of us need it to be.
It’s also a pretty good example of Crocs’ current knack for making things you wouldn’t necessarily expect from them. The brand has gone from foam clogs to genuinely interesting sneakers without losing that slightly unserious attitude along the way. Not bad for a brand once best known for garden shoes.
It's set to drop on Crocs' website for $120 on October 8.
