UGG season is officially upon us. And the forecast calls for fits so elevated that even the elements can’t put a damper on personal style. As Highsnobiety’s Fashion Director, Sebastian Jean, breaks down in the latest dispatch of The Fashion Files, there are countless ways to part the clouds of uninspired outfits and shine through whatever actual or metaphorical storm the day brings. For this iteration of our resident tastemaker’s styling masterclass, Jean was joined by special guest Lamar Robillard, an accomplished interdisciplinary artist with a sixth sense for superior streetwear.
While UGG has been out here defining comfort since the late ‘70s, Robillard first felt the weight of the beloved plush purveyors’ cultural impact around 2015. Noting that in the first installment of the two-part exploration, he saw everyone wearing its distinctive sheepskin boots that year—both on the streets and at parties—he decided to translate the trend in a manner that felt true to his signature style. Ten years on, UGG remains a go-to for Robillard (and the brand’s many celebrity fans and cult connoisseurs alike). In his chat with Jean, the conceptual artist also breaks down his notion that what you wear influences what you do; when he switches up his aesthetic while working on a piece, it becomes part of his identity and a catalyst for his creative process in turn.
The Fashion Files second episode puts it all in practice, as Jean and Robillard collaborate on a series of outfits built around UGG. First, Jean demonstrates the subtle ways one can add color to an otherwise neutral look. With black UGG Tasman Weather Hybrid, a matching black top, and baggy side-detailed shorts, the foundation is set for a not-so-everyday fit. Adding green socks, a light-pink button-down, and Robillard’s own jewelry gives the ensemble a memorable twist that feels personal to him.
On drier days, the Fashion Director explains how you can serve casual comfort without compromising on streetwear savvy. Taking on the UGG Classic Ultra Mini Boot (in the iconic Chestnut and black colorways, of course), he presents two riffs on a light-wash jeans look. Whether paired with a plain white shirt as in his own outfit, or juxtaposed against a bold striped sweater like the one Robillard wears, the key to upgrading a good fall ‘fit is layering. A long coat is the perfect bridge between a tried-and-true ensemble and a more polished masterpiece.
Lightweight enough for daily wear and comfortable enough to live in, UGG is the answer to almost any autumn outfit conundrum. When you’re ready for a fall adventure, the Tasman Weather Hybrid is up for the task—and, as Jean points out, it evokes the silhouette of a derby dress shoe for an elevated feel. There’s also never a wrong way to don the It crowd-adored Classic Ultra Mini Boot, but layering is the simplest shortcut to making an OOTD worth sharing. Armed with his
Fashion Files blueprints, Robillard promises you’ll see UGG in his regular rotation this season—and on anyone else who makes style their medium as they practice the art of getting dressed.
