With the 90th Academy Awards set to air this Sunday, Vanity Fair has produced a video which breaks down exactly what it takes to win the most prestigious award of the evening: Best Picture.
While it would seem to many that it would simply come down to ballots cast by the 8,000 members of the Academy, the video indicates that not only do studios, producers and financiers follow a template - chiefly making sure that a film debuts at either Sundance, Cannes, Telluride, Venice, or Toronto - but also how a voting process called "preferential balloting" - which is much different than simply tallying up the popular vote - can elevate films to the top spot who may have been consistent third and fourth place vote getters.
Needless to say, it's now easy to understand how last year's Oscar gaffe for Best Picture between Moonlight and La La Land occurred.
