Double Tap to Zoom

A few months ago, on November 7, was a day filled with Kiko Kostadinov firsts. It was the day of the first Kiko Kostadinov co-ed show, presenting the eponymous designer’s menswear line alongside Laura and Deena Fanning’s Kiko womenswear. It also debuted the brand’s first London store and unveiled the first Kiko Kostadinov x Dr. Martens shoes.

The store is open, the collections are rolling out and that debut made-in-England Dr. Martens collaboration is about to release, a concise two-parter consisting of two distinctly different vibes.

All-black Docs are Kostadinov’s menswear offering. Even the English shoemaker’s signature yellow stitching is rendered entirely black, emphasizing the thick velcro straps that replace the upper’s laces.

True to Kiko Kostadinov’s offbeat workwear tastes, the heavy-duty velcro fastening system gives the shoes a rugged edge.

But while Kostadinov's literally strapping shoe is almost unrecognizable as a Dr. Martens shoe, it offers a far less substantive stylistic update than Laura and Deena Fanning’s Docs.

The Kiko Kostadinov women’s Dr. Martens covers the familiar shape of a 1461 shoe in a green snakeskin shroud that cuts away at the toe and above the laces to reveal a green leather shoe beneath. A colorful contrast to the men’s shoe, showing just how weird Kiko Kostadinov sometimes gets with it

It’s hard to imagine these wholly disparate two shoes, both releasing on March 13, as part of the same collection. But they are both, in their own way, distinctly Kiko Kostadinov.
