When you come across a great film, it's always a good idea to do some research and check out other movies that are in the same sphere, so to speak. With our If You Liked series we intend to do just that. Each week we'll be presenting you with a selection of films you'll love "if you liked" that week's particular highlighted movie and/or director.
This week’s film recommendations are based on Jeff Nichols' recently released sci-fi drame, Midnight Special. The film revolves around a father and son who go on the run from the government and a group of religious extremists after discovering the boy has super natural powers and is not normal.
Today we'll be sharing with you six other sci-fi films that you're sure to love – Carrie (1976), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), The Fly (1986), Looper (2012), Predestination (2014) and Transcendence (2014).
An adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel, teen Carrie White faces taunting from classmates at school and torment from her psychotically religious mother. When strange occurrences start happening around Carrie, she begins to suspect that she has supernatural powers. Invited to the prom by the empathetic Tommy Ross, Carrie tries to let her guard down, but things eventually take a dark and violent turn.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
When Earth falls under attack from invincible aliens, no military unit in the world is able to beat them. Maj. William Cage, an officer who has never seen combat, is assigned to a suicide mission. Killed within moments, Cage finds himself thrown into a time loop, in which he relives the same brutal fight -- and his death -- over and over again. However, Cage's fighting skills improve with each encore, bringing him and a comrade ever closer to defeating the aliens.
The Fly (1986)
When scientist Seth Brundle completes his teleportation device, he decides to test its abilities on himself. Unbeknownst to him, a housefly slips in during the process, leading to a merger of man and insect. Initially, Brundle appears to have undergone a successful teleportation, but the fly's cells begin to take over his body. As he becomes increasingly fly-like, Brundle's girlfriend is horrified as the person she once loved deteriorates into a monster.
In a future society, time-travel exists, but it's only available to those with the means to pay for it on the black market. When the mob wants to eliminate someone, it sends the target into the past, where a hit man known as a looper lies in wait to finish the job. Joe is one such hired gun, and he does his job well -- until the day his bosses decide to "close the loop" and send Joe's future self back in time to be killed.
A temporal agent embarks on a final time-traveling assignment to prevent an elusive criminal from launching an attack that kills thousands of people.
Dr. Will Caster, the world's foremost authority on artificial intelligence, is conducting highly controversial experiments to create a sentient machine. When extremists try to kill the doctor, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed. Will's wife and best friend watch as his thirst for knowledge evolves to a quest for power.
If you liked Midnight Special, we highly recommend checking out Carrie (1976), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), The Fly (1986), Looper (2012), Predestination (2014) and Transcendence (2014).
