Nike officially unveils this year’s Chinese New Year collection, commemorating the Year of the Pig, the last animal sign of 2019’s Chinese Zodiac. The assortment showcases patterns that are symbolic of all 12 signs, coming together in a form of traditional Chinese patchwork called Bai Jia Yi, and featured on classic Nike, Jordan and Converse silhouettes.
The first style seen throughout the collection is a traditional geometric quilt pattern influenced by the 12 Chinese Zodiac symbols, while the second is a mosaic pattern of the 12 symbols. The Air Max 98 CNY is one particular entry from the range that highlights the Chinese Zodiac’s various symbolic touch points, including six materials that blend a “What The” configuration with the aforementioned Bai Jia Yi quilted pattern. Nike points out that each material style harkens back to features of the last 12 years of Nike CNY footwear.
Including the Kyrie 5, Zoom Pegasus Turbo, Air Max 98, Air Max 270, Air Jordan 12 and Chuck Taylor, Nike’s 2019 Chinese New Year collection is scheduled to release throughout the month of January.
In other Swoosh sneaker news, the brand officially introduces the Epic React Flyknit 2, dropping next month.
