Nike looks to reclaim the past and empower the future with its latest “Be True” collection, celebrating the LGBTQ community. For this year’s capsule, the chosen highlights are the color lavender and the pink triangle.
Lavender serves as one of the oldest symbolic references in LGBTQ culture, a blend of gender-linked light blue and light pink. The shade in turn appears on each of Nike’s 2018 “Be True” sneakers, including the Vapormax Plus, Air Max 270, Zoom Fly, and Epic React Flyknit.
The Lavender hue is then complemented by additional colors in the traditional rainbow scheme, showcased on the Vapormax Plus and the Air Max 270, while the Zoom Fly SP boasts a muted rainbow colorway.
The aforementioned pink triangle is also utilized throughout the collection, as it was originally used to identify LGBTQ individuals during WWII, then later adopted by the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) in their “Silence=Death” campaign from the ’80s.
In addition to the four sneakers, Nike’s 2018 “Be True” assortment also features T-shirts, socks, a hat, and a heritage hip pack, releasing at select retailers globally and online June 6.
In other Swoosh-related news, Virgil Abloh’s Air Jordan 1 “UNC” dropped out of nowhere yesterday.
