Editor's Notes: Fall means sweater weather, pumpkin spice everything, and Peanuts TV specials. Swatch's new Peanuts watch collection doesn't actively riff on It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown or A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving but it is launching in between the big autumn holidays, so the timing is right (no pun intended).
Apparently, there are 45 Peanuts specials out there but only a couple really matter. I mean, they're probably all good, but merely a handful of these films became annual rituals.
Still, Charles Schulz's iconic comic strip is a very worthy subject for collaborative drops.
From Marc Jacobs to plentiful Japanese watches, there's apparently no such thing as too much Peanuts.
With that in mind, Swatch has concocted a sextet of thematic timepieces laden with appropriately adorable imagery. You've got Lucy and Schroeder at his piano, Snoopy and Woodstock, a full spread of comic strips, and, of course, good ol' Charlie Brown himself.
There's bio-based plastic in the case and glass but the most interesting features are all these little touches incorporated within each watch. For instance, the baseball team-themed timepiece has a tiny baseball and glove on its hands.
Peanuts is such an ingrained element of American culture that I feel like the comic strip is nearly secondary to the franchise's mass-market appeal. When was the last time you read a Peanuts strip, anyhow (this is your reminder to catch up)?
It's funny seeing the breadth of Charles Schulz's creation against similarly marketable funny pages fare like Garfield. Even amidst the slew of merch, Peanuts still feels sweetly earnest.
I doubt we'll feel the same way about every Peanuts collaboration on the market but I doubt I'll ever get tired of seeing Charlie Brown in repose or a frolicking Snoopy. That's the next best thing, probably.
