Preachersnsneakers is the latest viral Instagram account to offer unsolicited commentary on streetwear and hyped sneaker trends, albeit with a twist: the account calls out celebrity preachers who wear outfits and sneakers worth thousands of dollars.

Some of the more expensive pieces on show include a pair of “Red October” Nike Air Yeezy 2s, which sell for upwards of $5,000 on the aftermarket, and pieces by Balenciaga, Gucci, and other high-end brands.

The account appears to be questioning why church leaders are indulging in expensive clothes and sneakers. As celebrity pastors, the preachers attract hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers and celebrity friends. In some cases, as seen below, the pastors receive their outfits as gifts, presumably from the aforementioned celebrity friends. The post below shows a comment by pastor Chad Veach, in which he claims his clothes had been given to him for free.

So while it might appear strange to see a church leader rocking a hyped ’fit, it doesn’t always mean they are paying resale (or even retail) for their kicks and garms. Without asking, though, it’s impossible to tell if the pastors featured on @preachersnsneakers bought their own clothing or if they got at least some of their gear for free from celebrity friends and wealthy congregation members.

The tax status of churches means donations in the form of outfits can serve as a tax write-off for companies and designers. For example, if Jerry Lorenzo were to gift his pastor $10,000 worth of Fear of God gear, it would be like tithing $10,000 to the church.

Preachersnsneakers has only been active for two weeks but has already gained more than 60,000 followers at the time of writing.
