What We’re Saying: The latest delivery of Raf Simons footwear has hit Highsnobiety Shop. Following last season’s release of the Cylon 21, which we speculated could become Raf Simons’ successor to the Ozweego, the Cylon 22 arrives in three distinct colorways: all white, all black, and anthracite.
The Cylon 22, unlike its more sneaker-leaning cousin, the Cylon 21, is a full-on boot. It is a high-top slip-on that features a zip that runs down the Achilles, allowing for easy entry and exit. The Cylon 22 pairs Raf Simons’ signature (RUNNER) sole with a multi-fabric upper that gives the boot a sportswear twist.
Simons recently previewed his RTW Spring 2022 collection, which was notable for the fact that it included no sneakers whatsoever. It was seen as a bold move by the designer, who has had a hand in some of the most popular sneakers on the market over the last few years. The Cylon range strengthens the speculation that Simons is moving away from traditional sportswear sneakers (for now), as they straddle the tightrope between sneakers and shoes.
The Cylon 22 is a step closer to shoes than the Cylon 21, and if Simons is saying no to sneakers in 2022, maybe we all should look at alternatives too (or at least add some non-sneaker fire to the rotation every once in a while).
