Shakira and Jennifer Lopez put on a show to remember when the two artists teamed up for the Super Bowl 54 halftime show on Sunday night. The performers wowed the crowd and television audience with their dance moves, outfits, and political statements on stage, but it was Shakira’s tongue, of all things, that stole the show.

In the middle of the performance, Shakira turned to the camera with her tongue out and, well, became an instant meme. It understandably left a lot of viewers perplexed, however, some digging reveals that the moment might have been planned in advance. Apparently, Shakira’s tongue call is a tradition often seen at Barranquilla's carnival — a huge celebration that takes place in Shakira's hometown.
