Created by Lena Waithe – one half of the wring duo (with Aziz Ansari) who took home the Emmy for comedy writing for the “Thanksgiving” episode of Master of None (becoming he first African-American woman to do so), The Chi is a coming-of-age story set on the South Side of Chicago.

Ushered to the small screen by Common, the show boasts an impressive ensemble of actors like Jason Mitchell, Jacob Latimore, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Alex Hibbert, Yolonda Ross, Armando Riesco, and Tiffany Boone and is directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Dope).

Whereas most people expect a series set on the South Side of Chicago to focus heavily on the much talked-about gang violence, The Chi instead looks to explore the humanity behind the headlines which often sensationalize the negativity.

The Chi premieres January 7 on Showtime.
