Release Date: March 31
Editor’s Notes: This Saturday, March 31, Kylian Mbappé is set to debut Virgil Abloh’s Nike Mercurial Vapor 360 on the pitch, coinciding with the launch of the boot. Ahead of the release, Nike has shared official imagery of the shoe, in addition to Abloh’s design intent.
First off, Virgil considers Nike’s Mercurial football boot to be “one of sport’s most dynamic and exciting product lines.”
“For this Mercurial, I was interested in bridging the gap between foot and eye coordination,” says Abloh. “All the dots on the boot represent an optimal place to strike the ball.”
Not only do these multicolored circles help the wearer identify where to hit the ball, but they also present a powerful message to the opposition.
In continuing to dish on the cleat, Abloh adds, “In my approach, I thought about what it would be like if I saw someone wearing the boot. Design is a powerful tool, as it communicates energy and a message, and it offers a unique capacity to make someone do a double take on-pitch — I feel like it would be intimidating to see this boot.”
