Many actors can be described as ubiquitous, but few truly earn the title like Scarlett Johansson does. The beauty with the husky voice first caught the world's attention as a cynical teen in cult classic Ghost World, and has since appeared in acclaimed dramas like Lost in Translation, summer blockbusters like The Avengers and even art-house fare like Under the Skin. Her career has been a success by any measure, but now it has been solidified. Johansson has officially broken the record as being the highest-grossing actress in the history of cinema.
The box office earnings for each one of Johansson’s films now totals up to a cool $3.3 billion, which makes her the 10th highest earning actor of all time, either male or female. She is also the youngest of the top 10 by far, with her peers including Hollywood veterans like Harrison Ford, Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Hanks. The next highest-earning female is Cameron Diaz, who lags far behind in the 19th slot.
Her role as Black Widow in the Marvel cinematic universe contributes to a large chunk of this total, with her highest grossing film overall being The Avengers, but she has a slew of high-earners on her resume. This year’s hugely successful The Jungle Book counts toward her total, as do films like Spike Jonze’s Her, The Prestige and even The Spongebob Squarepants Movie.
