Where the runway meets the street

Here at Highsnobiety, we’ve had our eye on Balenciaga’s footwear catalog for some time. The brand’s Arena and Pleated sneakers – in both low and high iterations — have been favored by the likes of Pusha T and Kanye West, and more recently we’ve seen tech-influenced neoprene options, proving that Balenciaga sneakers can contend with the best that high fashion has to offer.

But Balenciaga’s FW17 presentation in Paris has brought us something completely different. Helmed by Vetements designer Demna Gvasalia, Balenciaga has issued up a new luxe sneaker style called the “Triple-S,” which Balenciaga characterizes as “real, heavy-duty, high fashion-spec footwear.”

The description goes on to explain that the shoes are ready broken-in with pre-distressing, and constructed with three stacked soles. For some time, fashion sneakers have been championing the idea that ugly is cool, especially Raf Simons’ ongoing collaboration with adidas Originals on styles like the Ozweego. As this inclination toward chunky, awkward shoes has been fairly predominant for several seasons, we’re a bit surprised to see Gvasalia continuing the trend.

The news from Balenciaga comes fresh on the heels of a recent glimpse of Kanye West’s newest sneaker design, which the internet has gone ahead and named the YEEZY Runner, a style that also leans toward chunky, orthopedic aesthetics.

Watch for the Triple-S sneakers to drop later this year in multiple colorways, and stay posted as more information arrives.

Now, check out more FW17 fashion week coverage from Milan, Paris, London and more.
