He may not be president, but every cloud has a silver lining in that Bernie Sanders is now a bonafide fashion icon. One of the biggest takeaways from this year’s Paris Men’s Fashion Week was Demna Gvasalia’s FW17 Balenciaga show, which paid tribute to the Democrat runner. Now the man himself has appeared on CNN to address his newfound status in the world of haute couture.
Humble and understated as ever, the Bern laughs off the reference with good grace. Appearing on State of the Union, host Jake Tapper asks Bernie if he ever thought he would become a fashion icon, he answers: “No, not quite, Jake, I think of my many attributes, being a great dresser or a fashion maven is not one of them.” We couldn’t disagree more.
During his presidential bid, Bernie was famed for his unkempt sartorial style, which was often held up as an antidote to Donald Trump’s bloated narcissism. It clearly struck a chord with Gvasalia, who flipped the politician’s campaign logo on a selection of menswear items.
