Eyewear label Ace & Tate is teaming up with fellow Amsterdammers Lernert & Sander to release a special pair of sunglasses that distort your facial expression.

Lernert & Sander, a studio that releases the work of two talented artists and filmmakers, Lernert Engelberts and Sander Plug, has been working with Ace & Tate behind the scenes for quite some time — though this is the first full-blown collaboration.

Triggered by the idea that sunglasses obscure a large part of our facial expression, Lernert & Sander designed two frames that simultaneously cover facial expressions and at the same time create them.

The sunglasses feature flat-mirrored, reflective lenses (“the ultimate weapon to keep your eyes to yourself,” according to the studio) and are made of 100 percent biodegradable black acetate. Each pair features two extra dots on each lens, imitating pupils, giving off a cartoonish look.

One of the frames is looking one way and the other is looking another: hence, “The Lernert” and “The Sander.”

The Lernert & Sander x Ace & Tate eyewear collection drops March 17 and will be available at Ace & Tate online and in store at flagship locations.

In other news, Weekday is dropping classic ’80s-inspired denim for SS17.
