Red carpet dressing has long since been a total bore—even the fashion at this year’s Met Gala was a huge disappointment—but judging by the young stars who turned up (and turned it out) for last night’s MTV Movie Awards, there may be hope for the future.
As this fashionable new generation starts inevitably scoring Academy Award and Grammy nods (the cast of Moonlight, who already ruled this year’s Oscars red carpet, notwithstanding) we may just have some fashion icons in-the-making on our hands. Here’s what the most stylish youngsters we’ve got our eye on wore last night.
Millie Bobby Brown in Calvin Klein
While Millie Bobby Brown’s onscreen alter ego, Eleven, has enough swag to single-handedly make Eggo waffles a must-have accessory, IRL she’s the best-dressed 13-year-old we’ve ever seen. Though she’s ruled red carpets in everything from pint-sized Burberry to pint-sized Valentino, nothing compares to last night’s Calvin Klein shift dress, paired with white patent cowboy boots—an unsurprising choice, given that she’s one of the faces of Calvin Klein by Appointment. Still, her most iconic fashion moment to date was her punk-inspired Interview magazine shoot. After all, she was rocking a shaved head before Cara Delevingne and Kristen Stewart.
Amandla Stenberg in Fendi
Amandla Stenberg first broke our hearts as the ill-fated Rue in the first installment of The Hunger Games, but she has since blossomed into a bona fide fashionista. Last night the 18-year-old actress, who stars in this year’s YA tear-jerker Everything, Everything, looked effortlessly cool in a multi-pocketed Fendi number, but we’re most impressed by the fact that she’s pulling off both a shaved head and electric blue lipstick. Plus, we’ll never forget the time she brought Jaden Smith to prom and they both wore dresses.
Ashton Sanders in Calvin Klein
In retro-hued Calvin Klein, 21-year-old Ashton Sanders was undoubtedly the best-dressed dude on last night’s red carpet. Thankfully everyone got a second look at this fit when he took the stage with Moonlight costar Jharrel Jerome to accept the “Best Kiss” award. Given that he’s one of the faces of Calvin Klein underwear, we expect many more dope Raf Simons-designed looks in Sanders’ future.
Noah Cyrus in Baja East
At just 17, Noah Cyrus is already proving to be a helluva lot more than Miley’s little sis, particularly when it comes to her style; just get a load of the covetable Baja East suit she had on last night. Still, that was nothing compared to the JoyRich tracksuit she wore when she took the stage to perform her new single, “Stay Together.” Miley may have Noah beat when it comes to shock value, but we’d rather raid Noah’s athleisure-filled closet any day.
Charlie Heaton in Gucci and Joe Keery
Charlie Heaton and Joe Keery proved that Millie Bobby Brown isn’t the only fashionable cast member of Stranger Things in these (presumably) coordinated laid back looks. The cropped chinos and relaxed fits are giving total Cali surfer vibes. If there’s one look to cop from last night’s show, this is definitely it.
Zendya in Zuhair Murad
Thanks to celeb stylist Law Roach (who’s also responsible for Celine Dion’s recent fashion transformation) former Disney star Zendaya has been turning heads for a while now. Recently, however, the 20-year-old singer seems to have upped the ante, bringing a modernized Hollywood glamour to the red carpet. Though she looked next-level stunning last night in in green Zuhair Murad, we’re still thinking about that parrot-print Dolce and Gabbana dress she wore to the Met Gala last week.
Tommy Dorfman in DSquared2
If you haven’t watched Netflix’s teen melodrama 13 Reasons Why (or even if you did) you probably won’t recognize the name Tommy Dorfman, but one look at this outfit and you’ll be instantly convinced that he’s a fashion icon in the making. This is Dorfman’s first MTV Awards and he came to slay in a checkered skirt suit and glittery DSquared2 boots. This may be his very first iconic fashion moment, but we expect many more in his future.
