It’s fair to say that after the stellar launch of the adidas Anthony Edwards 1 two years ago, its successor had big hoops to fill. The futuristic basketball signature shoe has been enjoying an epic rise, much like the Minnesota Timberwolves’ shooting guard after whom it's named.

Now, just a month after the release of the Anthony Edwards 2, which is a strong level-up  from the original, adidas is finally dropping the one thing both iterations had been quietly asking for: a black version.

Perhaps an all-black update is something great basketball sneakers have to earn. Another legendary shoe, too, curiously waited nine whole generations before joining the dark side...

The “Core Black” is the sleekest take on the AE2 yet. Compared to the base red-and-gold colorway, this design feels more understated, as the dark, fang-like stabilizers and upper blend seamlessly into the padding system, contoured by white lines that culminate in the sole’s propulsion plate.

This contrast lends the shoe a distinct aerodynamic feel, whereas red accents on the tongue and heel inject a fiery touch that mirrors Edwards’ high-pressure style of play.

Cut slightly lower than its predecessor, the Anthony Edwards 2 reprises familiar features such as its sharp silhouette and reflective toe box, while introducing fresh textural and performance upgrades, replacing the grid-like body with softer padding to add bounce.

Releasing November 15 for $130, the black AE2 is but another reason to finally cop what is undoubtedly one of the best basketball sneakers of its time, as well as, in stealthy monochrome, a versatile fashion standout.
