Last week, Balenciaga released the latest in a long line of “WTF” pieces for FW18 — a seven-layered parka composed of a mixture of plaid shirts, jersey hoodies, technical fleeces, and more.
Not the first layered aesthetic from the controversial label, the coat follows the three-soled unit of its signature Triple S runner — another central subject of fashion debate. On launching at Balenciaga stocklists like MatchesFashion last week, the internet went wild for its similarities to one iconic scene from beloved sitcom Friends, while others gawked at the high price point of the piece (approximately $7,540).
Now, we’ve delved deeper into the seven layers of this statement coat, breaking down every style and bringing you the closest alternative to each of its components in order to build your own Balenciaga coat. Coming in at a grand total of $2,552, our selection of eight jackets are approximately a third of the total cost of Balenciaga’s one, with some particularly dope additions from Private White V.C., Patta, Junya Watanabe x Carhartt, and H&M.
So if you’re looking to nail layering this season but don’t want to drop nearly $8,000 on one piece, take a look at our cost- and quantity-friendly selection below.

Layer 2 — Hoodie
Layer 3 — Longline plaid shirt
