Highsnobiety’s Fitmas Calendar is a recap of 2019’s best celebrity style. Throughout the month of December, we’ll be looking back at one fit each day, diving deeper into why it worked and how you can achieve the look.
Who: Billie Eilish
The outfit she’s wearing: Custom Gucci pajamas and Gucci crystalline sneakers.
Where and when: LACMA Art + Film Gala, November 2019
Editor’s notes: I once read on Twitter that Billie Eilish’s style gives people anxiety, which seems a little unfair. Similar to her music – which nimbly dodges any kind of genre categorization – the artist’s personal aesthetic could be described as idiosyncratic (f you really need an adjective for it, you could just call it baggy). Eilish always looks extremely unbothered, like she wouldn’t care if she lost her phone. It’s a carefree mindset we can all aspire to in 2020.
Eilish’s style (created by artist-turned-stylist Samantha Burkhart) reflects the fashion mood of the decade, and what’s about to come. The fashion landscape has been in a state of flux throughout the late 2010s, with a lot of old rules being discarded. For example, looking like a DHL employee was a legitimate runway look, handbags became increasingly – maddeningly – small, and men’s shirting became more or less transparent. As evidenced above, pajamas trumped gowns for teen pop idols.
Eilish’s custom silk pajamas from Gucci and acid green roots on the red (or, in this case, blue) carpet was a solid execution of not giving a fuck, cleverly reflecting the theme of her Grammy-nominated album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Hell, she even makes Gucci’s crystalline-strap sneakers look good!
If you’re wanting to replicate the look (but don’t have Alessandro Michele on speed dial) you can check out a super-luxe pajama set from Brioni below, accompanied by a pair of Gucci Flashtrek sneakers in black.
