Known for continuously challenging what’s possible when it comes to innovating wearable timepieces, Swiss luxury watchmaker Hublot has once again raised the bar with the release of the Big Bang Unico Red Magic. The new design is the first watch to be made from brightly colored ceramic—something that was previously thought impossible—representing a first not only for the brand but for the watch industry as a whole.

Although ceramic is often used in watchmaking, it was relatively restricting aesthetically as pigments of color are unable to withstand the 2000°C+ temperatures needed to harden ceramic powder. This means that, until now, the ceramic used in watches could only be produced in darker shades. But, never ones to shy away from a challenge, over the last four years the brains at Hublot’s Research & Development lab have developed a new manufacturing process that uses pressure rather than heat to create a ceramic that is capable of holding vibrant colors while also being more resilient than conventional types.

Limited to 500 pieces only, this statement timepiece uses the new patented material for the 45mm case and bezel. The flange, indexes, minute and seconds counters, Arabic numerals, and hands all match the fiery red hue, as does the structured rubber strap. Black titanium screws, strap backing, and the titanium and ceramic buckle clasp add contrast to the design.

When it comes to specs, the beast of a watch boasts a Hublot HUB1242 UNICO self-winding chronograph movement with 72 hours of power reserve, anti-reflective sapphire glass, and a black ceramic back engraved with the unit number.
