Why it works: Erm…

Editor’s notes: When it comes to outré style, Lil Uzi Vert operates in another solar system. This is the dude who pairs Spongebob shirts with leather Vanson gloves and goes full-on glam rock (he’s a rapper, remember) in leopard-print COMME des GARÇONS pants. Being honest, I have no idea whether Uzi’s style is good or bad. It’s just… Uzi’s. It exists, and like the Great Pyramid of Giza or Philipp Plein’s sustained success, it’s one of those things we’ll never be able to fully wrap our heads around.

Yesterday, Uzi uploaded a series of Instagram posts in which he’s wearing one of his most hilariously wild ensembles to date. Riding in a car and casually listening to some Richard Marx (yes, Richard Marx, ffs), the rapper rocked a grail-worthy leopard-print FW11 Supreme x The North Face Nuptse jacket. Nothing out of the ordinary there. But look closer and you’ll see he’s layered it over a striped button-up shirt and cream V-neck grandad sweater. It’s like hip-hop hits the Hamptons.

If anyone else tried to mix Supreme with WASP-y prep, they’d look atrocious. Yet Uzi manages to adapt it in his own inexplicable, idiosyncratic, and utterly illogical way. Whether or not it looks cool is beside the point. Uzi likes what he likes and doesn’t really care what anyone else thinks. There’s a lesson to be learned in that for us all.
