Netflix announced on Tuesday that it had signed a multi-year deal with Ryan Murphy, who will create new series and films exclusively for the streaming giant. Murphy is currently the television hitmaker behind several buzz-worthy shows at 21st Century Fox.
Murphy rose to fame in the film and television industry thanks to his work on several Fox and FX series. Included in his long line of hits are Nip/Tuck, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and Feud.
If the hitmaker’s track record is anything to go by, Netflix Originals is set to become even more binge-worthy than it currently is. The streaming platform has been nominated for a number of Oscars already this year, so the prospect of a greater number of hit originals is enticing for both the streaming giant as well as its audience.
Commenting on the announcement, Murphy said in a statement: “The history of this moment is not lost on me. I am a gay kid from Indiana who moved to Hollywood in 1989 with $55 dollars in savings in my pocket, so the fact that my dreams have crystallized and come true in such a major way is emotional and overwhelming to me.”
According to the New York Times, the deal Murphy signed with Netflix is for five years and worth “as much as $300 million.” His decision to leave comes soon after Disney announced its plans to purchase a controlling stake in 21st Century Fox.
