The Grippiest Shoe Soles Just Became Your Drink Coasters
Italian mountaineer Vitale Bramani founded Vibram nearly 90 years to solve the singular issue of hiking shoes with inadequate grip. And in that regard, the company’s spent the past 89 years overachieving years, as it's now the foremost public-facing maker of high-end soles used by everyone from artisanal Italian bootmakers to the most tech-obsessed trail shoe brands.
In the niche of rubber shoe soles, Vibram is king. But it's evolved beyond even that realm, most prominently with its freaky glove-shaped shoes and less obviously with some clever non-shoe-related accessories.
While the world of Vibram soles is a serious affair, mainly consisting of seriously hard-wearing gear, Vibram’s undersung accessory department is quite literally all fun and games. Its dog accessories, for instance, include a Vibram rubber disk for fetching and a Vibram rubber ball hardy enough to take on canine teeth.
But Vibram’s resoleable soles don't just translate into doggone treats. The brand also creates coasters, stocked at fashion boutiques like Japanese mega-retailer BEAMS, and doormats that welcome your Vibram-soled shoes home. The latter sells out so swiftly I could only find it being resold on Grailed for several hundred dollars.
Still, at least the $15 Vibram water bottle and cutesy shoe-shaped keyring are easy enough to find.
Vibram’s yellow branding is a signifier of quality that inherently elevates the ordinary, as evidenced by the cool factor granted to limited Vibram-soled Nike Air Force 1s and Timberland boat shoes. The same goes for frisbees and doormats — it only takes that little Vibram logo to turn them into IYKYK flexes.
