Every wonder why cartoon characters quite often wear gloves, especially back in the days of Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Pinocchio, among a slew of other iconic figures? Well in their latest visual, Vox explores just that, gaining insight from animation historian and NYU professor, John Canemaker.

Canemaker initially discloses that there are multiple reasons why these characters are pictured with gloves, the first of which is that drawing gloves saves time, instead of having to detail more lifelike fingers and hands.

In addition, gloves provide these little guys with color contrast that makes them more aesthetically pleasing to the viewer, while also bringing non-human entities to life.
