Double Tap to Zoom

It's rare that a subcultural sneaker smash-hit makes its way into the mainstream but adidas' Adizero EVO SL is a crossover success story. The thick running sneaker earned its stripes (no pun intended) with gear nerds when it launched in 2024 before breaking out in a bigger way, repped by everyone from casual joggers to city strollers to wake-up-at-five-for-a-sprint athletes. (Anecdotally, I've seen several pairs on sidewalks around New York, a lifestyle win rarely notched by technical trainers.)

The well-balanced Adizero EVO SL is a looker in its own right — and follows a recent trend of downright handsome Adizero silhouettes — with several suave in-line colorways under its belt. But Hermanos Koumori took it to another level.

Founded by Alex León and Alejandro Sandler in 2018, Hermanos Koumori is a Mexico City sport imprint that's pretty prolific in Mexico, with about a half-dozen stores to its name. Its take on the Adizero EVO SL isn't its first stab at a collaborative adidas shoe but it is its best, so long as you look closely.

Even dressed in an "earthy" makeup reflective of "the muted tones around Mexico City," according to a statement from the founders, the Adizero EVO SL HK (for Hermanos Koumori, of course!) doesn't initially look all that different from its ordinary iterations. But more careful consideration tells the story.

And the story, really, is: don't mess with success.

The beauty of the Adizero EVO SL HK lies in how it alters utilitarian sneaker's already solid stylistic foundation with a handful of complementary tonal colors subtle enough to escape immediate attention. There's something to be said about collaborative sneakers that rework their subject from the ground up and there's something to be said about honing the best qualities through restraint.

Available January 15 on adidas' website, the Adizero EVO SL HK is very much the latter. This is as good as this shoe has ever looked, though it's always felt pretty good (or so I've heard).
