What We’re Saying: The GmbH x ASICS GEL-Chappal was first unveiled at Paris Fashion Week FW20 in early 2020 alongside the already-released GEL-Quantum 360 6. The GEL-Chappal was noteworthy because of its extreme, hybrid aesthetic. While hybrid sneakers that mix formal and casual styles are nothing new, GmbH’s design was so far removed from anything that had been previously unveiled, that it immediately made headlines.

The vegan leather upper is inspired by the chappal, a traditional footwear style originating in India and popular in other South Asian countries, such as Pakistan. Juxtaposing that, the sole unit looks to be taken from the recently-relaunched and samurai armor-inspired, GEL-Kinsei OG.

The use of vegan leather — usually found on more formal shoes — and mixing that with the casual aesthetic of the chappal, while also inserting sportswear influences gives the entire project a multi-layered feeling.

The GmbH x ASICS GEL-Chappal is available now on GmbH’s official site, for approximately $240.
