If you haven't heard of LR Paris, that's because it's a design and production studio specifically for custom gifts for extremely exclusive clients. The French company, which was founded half a century ago, has worked with and for storied names like the Oval Office, Plaza Hotel, Guggenheim, Goldman Sachs, Graff and Harvard University, to name just a few.
This year, the creative studio has brought on American industrial designer Frederick McSwain as its new Chief Creative Officer, who aims to bring his knowledge on cutting-age production techniques and a network of emerging talents in design from his past experiences in Poltrona Frau and Cappellini.
For a French company with tradition, hiring an American designer is both an opportunity and a risk. "As an industrial designer, I understand the importance of objects performing a function -- where utility has value," McSwain says. He adds, "[but] at LR Paris, I am able to create product that is emotional, because giving a gift is emotional." It will be interesting to see what the New Age designer brings to the Parisian name.
