Apple has released a new commercial showcasing the iPhone 7's new stereo speakers and water resistance — but even the Wes Anderson-style gimmicks can't save it from falling flat.
Titled "Dive," the commercial shows a cute little bald-headed man listening to the Cuban jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval's "La Virgen de la Macarena" — you'll know it when you hear it — by the side of a pool in some swelteringly hot country. The man then whacks up the volume before heading up to the pool's highest diving board and swans perfectly down back into the water.
The point Apple is trying to make is that its speakers are loud, and that the phone is partially protected against water damage. Only the problem is that because the phone isn't completely waterproof, in which case the man could've dived into the water wearing it on his arm, it sits by the side of the pool in an inexplicable puddle of water.
In comparison to Apple's earlier ad that saw a man cycling in the rain while using the phone on his handlebars (see below), which made a lot of sense and promoted the phone's splash-proof benefits, this one just seems a little pointless. Check it out above.
In other tech news, the iPhone 8 may have wireless charging.
