As massive companies continue to try and outdo one another with cool but ultimately pointless marketing campaigns, KFC has taken things to another level entirely with an attempt to send one of its famed Zinger sandwiches into space.

Spearheading the ambitious project is Rob Lowe, who is featured in the accompanying 90-second advert as Mission Commander Colonel Sanders. "Can you actually launch KFC's world-famous Zinger chicken sandwich into space?" ponders the former Parks and Recreation star. "And the answer is, we certainly hope so. Our entire marketing campaign depends on it."

"This is the biggest stunt I’ve ever been apart of in 20-plus years. We’re going all out to establish ourselves as a sandwich player," KFC president Kevin Hochman told Business Insider. "It’s easier said than done. We’re late to the party — that’s why we’re throwing in the kitchen sink."

It's not the first time of late that KFC has exercised lateral thinking on the advertising front, having already launched edible nail polish, scented candles, scented sunscream and a chicken box that can actually charge your phone.

Stay posted for further information on the mission.
