In a new interview with Paper, Lil Nas X appeared to address his pre-fame internet activity, admitting that it would “sometimes go too far.”

In April, New York magazine’s Intelligencer linked the artist to a now-suspended Nicki Minaj stan account on Twitter (@nasmaraj), a connection that Lil Nas X previously told NPR was “a big misunderstanding.” The account regularly went viral thanks to its choose-your-own-adventure threads and had a six-figure following at the height of its fame. However, according to Paper, it also used “edgelord” practices and tweeted content “that would be considered off-tone today.”

While Lil Nas X hasn’t confirmed his connection to the account, he did reveal that he went viral in his pre-fame life and opened up about how his online behavior has changed.

“I do try to stay positive online,” he told Paper. “I’ll ask myself, ‘Is this going to offend somebody?’ before I do it. A lot of the stuff I used to do years before would sometimes go too far. I know I have a platform now, so there’s more of a need to make sure nothing is hurtful or too crazy.

“Even dealing with mean people, I can do it because I understand them. I used to sometimes say mean shit for no reason. I know that when people say things, they’re just thoughts that might be there today but I’m not going to care about tomorrow. What am I even gaining from acknowledging it?”
