Chances are that you’ve never heard of Lila Drew, but after today there’s no way you’ll forget her name. The newly 18-year-old singer-songwriter hails from London where she was classically trained on the piano. Up until recently, all of her demos have been self-produced and combine the most appealing aspects of R&B, indie, electronic, hip-hop, and soul music. Today, we’re premiering her debut single “faded/2am” featuring Goldlink.
The Michael “Mighty Mike” McGarity-produced track is fresh off her forthcoming EP due out in 2019. In an email to Highsnobiety, Drew explained how she originally penned the sultry song in a notebook that she’s taken all over the world since leaving the UK.
“Somehow, this music escaped my bedroom,” she wrote. “It was produced on computers, phones, and old guitars; and on Ableton, Protools, and Voice Memos. I’d like to think of it as a letter to myself, a snapshot of this particular moment in time which seems like such a paralyzing one for young people. There’s a Frank Ocean quote that I’ve kept in mind throughout this process: ‘We know the story; we’re just seeing it in flashes overlaid’… As cheesy as it sounds, here is some music that I think has captured my coming-of-age, a kind of musical diary.”
Goldlink told us that he “jumped at the opportunity” to work with Drew on this track and even describes her as “one of the most refreshing new voices in music.” Without further ado, stream the full song below.
