Editor’s Notes: Today Nike unveiled its latest football boot, the PhantomVSN. Designed by Phil Woodman, this boot is packed to the brim with exciting new technology and, judging by a quick first look, represents another step forward in football footwear design.
The main advance is a new construction that debuts on the PhantomVSN and will soon be adopted in other Nike footwear. This is Quadfit, a mesh inner layer that “conforms to fit ’most any foot but retains its shape and will not overstretch,” according to Woodman. The idea is that the boot is match-ready out of the box, without any need to break it in.
In addition, the PhantomVSN features a hidden lacing system dubbed “Ghost Lace” along with an improved and highly texturized Nike Flyknit upper, a new traction pattern on the cleats for improved movement, and weather-proofing for all conditions.
The triple-black colorway, seen in the gallery above, will be released tomorrow, July 18, on Nike’s website, while other versions are set to follow in the lead up to the new football season. Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho, Washington Spirit’s Mallory Pugh, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, Chelsea’s Fran Kirby, and new Bayern Munich signing Leon Goretzka are among the players who’ll be wearing the PhantomVSN in 2018-19.
Check out the video below, which explains how Quadfit works before leaving your thoughts on the new boots in the comments.
