The RealReal

As the fashion industry attempts to reckon with its waste, brands continue to release initiatives that take discarded, damaged, and distressed fabrics and reshape them into something new. ReCollection is the latest such initiative — it's helmed by resale platform The RealReal who has created this Earth Month project in partnership with eight luxury brands.

A-COLD-WALL*, Balenciaga, Dries Van Noten, Jacquemus, Simone Rocha, Stella McCartney, Ulla Johnson, and Zero +Maria Cornejo have all donated defective garments to The RealReal. The RR then passed the pieces over to LA-based company Ateliers & Repairs, who incorporated unfinished American quilts and upcycled the materials into sellable pieces.

"As a designer, I think it's the biggest compliment for your designs to have an afterlife – to me, that is luxury," McCartney said in a statement. "And I take it into consideration from the beginning of the process. The timelessness of the design, how it's made, what materials are used to produce it – it is all part of our ethos at Stella McCartney. We invest a lot to make sure that our products are made to last rather than end up in a landfill."

ReCollection 01 features 50 garments in total, some of which you can see in the gallery above, and retail for between $195 and $2,450. The full collection is available to see over on TheRealReal now. The A-COLD-WALL* pieces are the clear standouts but if you want to cop you'll have to head there quickly as pieces are already selling out.

A portion of each sale is donated to One Tree Planted, but it is unclear exactly what percentage of sales the NGO will receive.
