We Need to Talk About Hedi

With Saint Laurent’s profits rocketing, Charlie Porter ponders Hedi Slimane’s many detractors – is he a designer, a marketeer or a stylist? While many have argued that Slimane’s highly commercial approach to the iconic Parisian label is merely presentation rather than design, Porter makes some astute arguments that the house’s director is more dextrous a designer than many of his peers. – Alec Leach

Welcome to the ‘School of Porn’

Porn is taboo: no one really wants to talk about it, but everyone’s probably had a peek at some point. While much is often made of the actors, rarely do we think about where they go to learn their craft. Rocco Siffredi (a.k.a. the ‘Italian Stallion’) has opened his very own porn university that lets young hopefuls learn the tricks of the trade from the experienced veteran himself. Read the story here. – Jane Fayle

Bullshit Design

The idea has been championed by greats like Leonardo da Vinci and has perpetuated the design world for centuries but, and this one may come as a surprise for all of you design geeks out there, it turns out the magical ‘golden ratio’ theory is a load of bullshit. It’s a little complex, but the general idea is that objects that divide perfectly into themselves hold an inherent aesthetic beauty. In theory it makes sense, but as this article explains, in practice the doctrine just doesn’t hold up. – Thomas Welch

Off-White’s Abloh On Point

Perhaps unfortunately, any mention of Virgil Abloh is stymied by an almost obligatory mention of his employer, Kanye West (including this). But as the Off-White designer’s collections continue to garner ever more critical praise and respect – at a point when West’s are marked for their polarizing effect – Cameron Wolf profiles Abloh the designer, the creative polymath and, yes, the creative lead at DONDA, as he very successfully manages to step out of Yeezy’s shadow. – Jack Drummond

Life in the West

Get in a time machine and voyage back to the 1980s, when Berlin was still divided by the iron curtain, separating East from West. Governed by Germans but jointly supervised by the United States, United Kingdom and France, West Berlin’s inhabitants enjoyed a relatively liberal political climate, in rather drastic contrast to the Russian-sponsored East. It’s difficult to grasp what life was like for West Berliners at the time, living in an island surrounded by a sea of East German autocracy. But this series of snapshots does well to provide a glimpse of their world hemmed in by a giant wall. – Chris Danforth
