The Pelagos calls on TUDOR’s heritage while breathing new life into its legacy. The brand has long been crafting watches that are more than mere wrist accessories — they are actual tools of the trade — and the Pelagos is one fine example.
The Pelagos is an impeccably made yet supremely unfussy dive watch that is completely submersible and has been tested in real underwater conditions — under Lake Geneva to be exact. Another feature that makes TUDOR’s creation a true “tool watch” is the helium escape valve. Though the timepiece is guaranteed to a depth of 1,640 feet, this additional safety feature is invaluable for protecting it against underwater saturation. In the event that helium particles do enter the Pelagos (which can happen due to the small size of helium atoms), the valve allows for the particles to pass through without damaging the interior.
Adding yet another element of practicality to the 42mm case is a titanium and ceramic rotating bezel set with illuminating markers; this allows the wearer to glean information in even the lowest visibility conditions. Crafted from stainless steel and titanium, the watch is lightweight and handsome, proving TUDOR is designing for more than appearances. Although the watch is rather substantial, it’s not distracting in the least, and fits under the sleeve rather conveniently.
Yet another big win for the Pelagos is its interior. The watch is powered by TUDOR’s recently developed MT5612 movement, which features an anti-magnetic silicon hairspring and houses a 70-hour power reserve which greatly reduces the need to wind the timepiece.
For ease and convenience TUDOR has also designed the face with big “snowflake” hands, so wearers underwater (or on land) can quickly glance down and discern the time with little effort. This feature is also a clever nod to TUDOR’s past as these hands have been a hallmark of the brand’s dive watches since the 1960s.
TUDOR’s Pelagos is available in blue and black colorways and comes with both a titanium bracelet and a rubber strap with diving extension link.
