Compton is one of those pop culturally significant neighborhoods that are imbued with a certain mythical quality that people never get tired of hearing about. Capitalizing on this, and Kendrick Lamar’s recent spike in media attention following his slew of Grammy nominations, VICE‘s music channel, Noisey, ventured into his home ‘hood to meet the people that shaped him.

In the second episode of the eight-part “Bompton” series, Noisey host Zach Goldbaum spends a day with Kendrick’s childhood friend Lil L, who’s pursuing his own musical ambitions. L’s grandma invites him and the crew over for a gumbo dinner and shares her experiences as a Compton OG since 1965.
